I can't tell you how many times I've been out and about and I've seen women dressed in ratty, tatty sweatpants hitched up to their knees by ratty, tatty UGG boots. Are they not aware of how sloppy and unkempt they look? And if they are, do they not give a flying toss? They must not because oftentimes they're hardly wearing any make-up and they've got their dirty, greasy hair piled up on top of their heads in a messy birds nest.
If you're doing chores around the house, then by all means, whip out your trusted sweats and UGGs (and pajamas) but when venturing out of doors, I believe that a woman should make some kind of effort to look her best. Would June Cleaver (the Beaver's mom) ever appear out of doors looking like a sloppy mess? Heck no! 1950s housewives prided themselves on always looking their best no matter how lousy they woke up feeling that morning. What's changed since then? Maybe YOU can enlighten me because I've never been able to explain it.
I can't even begin to imagine what men must be thinking when they see women dressed so haphazardly. But, then again, women who typically leave the house looking like a hot mess are usually the ones who have already landed themselves a husband. Yet another problem I cannot solve! Help!

ReplyDeleteOh MAN! I could not agree with you more!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely HATE seeing people out and about in sweatpants. Why?! If you're at the gym, fine. If you're at home, okay. If you're on a long roadtrip, sure. But when you're over say, 7 years of age, there is almost no excuse to be outside of the house in sweats. It looks SO sloppy.
Pyjamas? I didn't realize people did this until I went to university. And I couldn't believe anyone did this outside of university (I can *sort of, but just barely* understand being late for class, living in a dorm and just rolling into class...) but really? Put on a pair of pants. Didn't your mother teach you anything?
And Uggs... I'm convinced that the reason they're called that is because it's short for "Ugly's" ... not to mention that they're HORRIBLE for your posture!
Great post. Women of the world, take note!!
Katie, I honestly thought that Uggs were called that because of how ugly they were... You mean they aren't?
ReplyDeleteI don't understand either - I mean, I don't dress up for work, jeans/cords and a nice shirt is pretty much my uniform, but I would never be caught dead outside the house in sweatpants or pjs. Even when I'm on my way to dance/zumba class, I put on jeans and change when I get there.
To me, wearing sweatpants/pjs/juicy pants/yoga pants/etc, outside the house, is basically saying that you have no respect for yourself. And that's just sad.
I'm okay with nice sweatpants if you are making a quick stop somewhere to or from the gym. Especially, if your gym shirt is matched to it properly.
ReplyDeletePajamas and slippers should never be seen in public, sorry.
Haha, you may be right! I'm actually googling it right now to see if I can figure it out. I've read both that it comes from "ugly" and from the way the boot "hugs" your foot.
ReplyDeleteEither way. They're ugly, end of story!
By "quick stop" I mean buying water from the fast mart or getting gas. Not hanging out at the local coffee shop. ;)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with most of your post. hehee...
ReplyDeleteIt makes me so mad when I see ratty sweatpants and pj's out of the house. It's disgusting!!!!
I am one of those girls that works out a lot. I work out and go home. But if I need to stop at the grocery store, I am NOT changing. I don't wear ratty clothes when I work out. I wear nice leggings that make my ass look killer.. so I don't think it's bad at all ;)
But.... don't shoot me. I have uggs and I wear em and like em ;)
Guilty as charged, here.
ReplyDelete1. I work in the fitness industry, thus, yoga pants are a staple of my wardrobe. Sorry, but I'm not going to bring a pair of "nice clothes" to change into while I run errands after work so that I can appease those 'refined women' who find me so despicable.
2. I wear Uggs and I love them. They are not a staple of my wardrobe, but if I am training clients at 6am and it is 30-something outside, I am wearing my Uggs to try and stay somewhat warm. So shoot me.
3. Why in the world should I have to wear make up, if I can get away without wearing it? Sure, I wear it when necessary, but I'm certainly not putting make up on to go train clients, or to workout myself. And if I happen to stop and take care of some errands on the way home and I offend you by not wearing make up, again, shoot me.
4. Same thing with the hair. Most of the time, it's piled on top of my head. Sometimes, it's a messy bun. Sometimes, it's a sleek pony. Sometimes, it's hidden underneath a hat.
I guess what I'm trying to say is...why do you care so much about what others look like?
"I believe that a woman should make some kind of effort to look her best."
ReplyDeleteReally?
I am definitely not guilty of some of the fashion crimes presented here, I do think there is a big difference with people who will be found on People of Walmart and those who chose not to go out in their best jeans, no make up and their hair not done.
I'm sorry but sometimes I could care less what I look like if I'm running to Target to pick up some Maxi Pads, you know?
"1950s housewives prided themselves on always looking their best no matter how lousy they woke up feeling that morning. What's changed since then? Maybe YOU can enlighten me because I've never been able to explain it."
What's changed? Well women started thinking for themselves. They realized that you don't always have to look and act perfect.
I don't know, I'm very thankful that we do not live in the June Cleaver era.
Of course, I already "landed a husband" but I can say, I was like this before ever getting married.
Just my two cents.
Sarah
I'm loving how much drama this post has caused (and it's not even an hour old yet!). Thank you for all of your comments - I'm thinking a follow-up post is in order :D
ReplyDeleteOoo, controversy! Nice. hehe
ReplyDeleteI've added my two cents about the 'inside clothes worn outside', but when it comes to 'dressing up' every day... It's not for me.
I only wear make-up/jewellery/nice clothes if I'm going 'out' (dancing/dates/concerts/etc). When I'm going to work, to do the groceries, to a friend's, etc, it's my uniform of jeans/cords and either a band shirt or a nice shirt (if I'm going to work, and even then sometimes a band shirt will make its way into my office wardrobe).
Sure I'm still single, and if people think that's why I'm still single, that's their choice. I dress for me and always will. But I think anyone who doesn't love me for my personal style, whether it be my crazy goth dresses, band tshirts or all that's in between, doesn't deserve to love me.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't "dress up" unless it's some sort of special occasion.
ReplyDeleteMy day-to-day (including work) "uniform" is jeans and a t-shirt, button down shirt, or sweater, depending on the weather (sometimes I'll switch it up with cords or other pants. VERY rarely, I'll wear a skirt)
Make-up-wise, I generally only wear eyeshadow, mascara and lipgloss.
My hair is usually pulled off my face in either a ponytail, clip with it half up/half down, or headband.
Shoes are usually flats of some sort (boots, runners, or other flats). I have tonnes of heels, but I don't like wearing them for a full day at work.
I'm not sure that my sense of style either attracts dates or sends people running, but like Chrisy said, I dress for me.
I'm a jeans and tee shirt girl. Period. Always will be.
ReplyDeleteHair: most days you're lucky its brushed and in a pony. If I have time I'll straighten it...then put it in a pony.
Same with makeup: I'll put it on if I have time. If not...oh well.
I have knockoff Uggs: maybe not the cutest things out there, and aren't my everyday shoes but they keep my toes warm this time of year.
For ugly shoes they are awfully popular.
I don't think I should have to put that much effort into myself just to run to the grocery store. Even my "best jeans" are $20 Old Navy jeans.
"...I believe that a woman should make some kind of effort to look her best. "
I know this post is about women, but the same applies for men. How is it Ok for some men to run about their day in sweats and hoodies but we're not?
I'm comfy and I like my clothes. If the general public doesn't too darn bad for them.
@Erin, it's totally not all right for men to look sloppy, you're right. I agree with you whole-heartedly. But this post was geared mainly towards (and about) women. Perhaps I'll do a similar post about men soon :) There's nothing better than seeing a well-groomed man in a sharp suit!
ReplyDeleteUggs are a god sent when you are in the airport and you are going to be on a plane for more than a day. Sure if I am flying from New York to Toronto I will put on a pair of flashy walking around boots that cost as much as my air fare. But for example this April when I fly to Calgary for 1 day then fly to Amsterdam for thre then over to Lyon for one night and back to Amsterdam to Calgary and the same day jump on a flight to Montreal for a couple of nights to Toronto and then right over to New York and back. (Mind you this is all in a 2 week period) My uniform will be this : Long warm leggings, soft knitted socks, under wear by the gap, soft bra, colorful bando bra, long tank top lose fitting or cute long shirt, some type of soft sweater and a pair of uggs. My jacket is packed into the suitcase as soon as I am in line to check my bag so I don’t have to lug it around. My hair is normally in a high pony tail, with a soft black head band on, over sized sunglasses and some kind of lip stain. Uggs maybe transferred for my gray hunter boots. But my uggs are not nor are they ever “dirty”. They are brushed and sprayed as needed. Not everyone feels my flying style, I could be on a what not to wear moment but I am pretty sure I don’t care. Because while the woman in the suit is trying not to crease her pants on the 15 hour flight I am sleeping like a baby. If I have some one to impress on the other side I zip open my bag and jump into a little thing.
ReplyDeleteP.s. in the 1950’s my grandmother lived on a farm with out running water and 8 kids running under her feet. I am pretty sure she was not touching up her lipstick and powder between changing sheets, hand washing clothing and nursing babies. It was a small % of women who really could afford to always look their best, just like today.
I'm with Sarah here. I'm guilty of one, the sweatpants. I don't won Uggs because I don't like them but the boot my mom got me for xmas look like them alittle bit. I've worn them all winter long. I mean it IS winter and they ARE winter boots. That IS the purpose of them. I do wear sweatpants out often. If I'm going food shopping, why do I need to wear jeans, or regular pants? Yeah I'm going to get my hair done the last thing I want to do is sit under the dryer for an hour while in a pair of jeans. It's not very comfortable. And of course I wear them to the gym. Anyone that doesn't have the kind of hair that I have could never understand. It's too much to explain. As for makeup, again like Sarah said, if I can get away without wearing it then why should I bother. My husband prefers me without it actually. He likes when I wear it but love my natural look better.
ReplyDeleteGuilty of the sweatpants out of the house. However, they are not torn or ratty, and they don't have "Juicy" or "Pink" plastered across my ass. Most of the time they are black or dark gray. I hate leaving the house without makeup, but if the boy and I wake up and want to head to the diner for a quick breakfast, I'm sliding into my sweats, washing my face, and putting my moptop under a hat :) That being said, I'm usually matching from my hat down to my undies...
ReplyDeleteI also "dress" for work M-F, complete with full make-up and hair, so if I need to run out for milk when I get home, you never know what you might catch me in :)
I just remembered how on Monday night... after I went to yoga with a friend, we went out for dinner WEARING OUR WORKOUT CLOTHES! {shock!} LOL... I figure if it bothers people that we looked like that, then it's their problem. Not ours. We didn't want to impress anyone. We just finished an awesome class, and we were hungry. Why the F should we change just to please other people's eyes?
ReplyDeleteI don't really care what others wear or don't wear, however, I agree with you that under most circumstances, sweatpants (unless they are for work or whatever) are tacky when worn in public. I can understand in situations like Sarah's, where she wears them to work, then does not change after work and stops to buy milk. But, if you wake up in the morning, and have to run errands, why cant you throw on a tshirt and some jeans? Pajamas are never acceptable in public. I am not a huge fan of Uggs, and I despise them when women wear them with short shorts or skirts which makes NO sense since they are for colder weather generally. I did see an insanely cute pair the other day though, that were all black and sequined (a friend of mine was wearing them).
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I agree with you for me, that I like to look somewhat put together when I leave the house, and would never wear sweatpants or pajamas, and prob never Uggs unless a really cute pair caught my attention and I wanted to spend an excessive amount of money for winter boots. But, for others, to each their own. I try not to judge....
I agree with Sarah. While I don't work in the fitness industry, I spend my day on my feet, massaging people. I need to be comfortable, and while I don't own a single pair of sweatpants, I do own several pairs of yoga pants. And as I type this, I am home from working for 6 hours on clients, and I wore black yoga pants, a black top, my hair in a messy bun and kind of frizzy, and the only makeup on my face is a little bit of mascara.
ReplyDeleteI did decide to dress it up a bit and wear some earrings ;)
A guy I know commented a while back and said women need to make an effort when they are out shopping or at the bookstore because "you never know when a guy might check you out". My response? If a guy doesn't accept me in yoga pants, it's not going to work out because unless I'm actually out out? Chances are I'm dressed casual, it's who I am and I'm too low maintenance to be bothered to dress up to go get takeout or something.
