Spring 2011: Time to clean out your closet!

The first item of clothing that you should wave goodbye to forever is the JEGGING (denim legging).  I'm not sure why these were such a huge sensation since more than half the human population couldn't wear them without looking incredibly ill-at-ease (myself included).  Following along the same lines as the jegging is the SKINNY jean.  Thankfully, both are out!

The good news?  Enter the high-waisted, wide-legged trouser.  Set to become one of the biggest trends of Spring 2011, these demure trousers offer more coverage and a shapelier bottom.  However not everyone can wear them.  Lo and behold, I fall into that category.

Consumer beware: if you're bigger than a US size 6 I would not recommend you buy a pair of these trousers.  Unfortunately the cut of these pants is extremely unforgiving on those of us who tend to put on weight in the hip & thigh area.  Instead, try a boot-cut jean/trouser - they're classic and will never go out of style.  The slight flare of the boot-cut balances your top and bottom half creating a flattering silhouette.  I range between a size 8 and 10 and I find that this style suits me best.

  1. Ick, I hate high-waisted pants. I don't mind high-waisted pencil skirts... but pants are ... ick. I didn't like the skinny jean when it first appeared, but I've grown to like it, and I've added a few pairs, amongst my array of boot-cut jeans.
Personally, I'll probably stick with both... I'm never really one for following trends, just more for finding styles that look decent on me. But I don't think I'll be adding high-waisted, wide-legged trousers to my collection any time soon. They'll just make me look short and fat!

  2. I love high waisted skirts, but I think I'm way too short to wear high waisted pants. Jeggings have never been cool to me, although I do have to admit that when my 5 year old picked out a pair a few weeks ago, I bought them for her. She totally rocks them!

  3. I love skinny jeans, although I usually wear them tucked into boots. I like some highwaisted pants. I found these amazing vintage-y looking highwaisted Theory jeans for $8 at TJ Maxx a few weeks ago and wanted to cry because they were one size too small, but it's usually hard for me to find high-waisted pants that aren't 80s mom glam ;) I agree with the other girls that I love highwaisted skirts!

  4. New year, new trend for me to avoid. :D

I think your next post should be about what colors will be in for spring, and how to wear them. ;)
